Man killed, 2 others hurt in shootings near Charlotte light rail station

A man died and two others were hurt in shootings near a northeast Charlotte light rail station Thursday night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were first called to a business at the corner of Tom Hunter Road and North Tryon Street around 10 p.m., where they found a young man with at least one gunshot wound.

Despite rendering medical aid, he died at the scene. He was later identified as 22-year-old Derrick Answon Baker.

Shortly after the first call, a second one came in from a strip mall on North Tryon Street, only two-tenths of a mile from the business.

There, police found another person with a gunshot wound and took them to the hospital.

Then, around 11:30 p.m., a third person showed up at Atrium Health University City hospital with a gunshot wound. Police said that person’s injury appeared to be minor.

During a news conference after the shooting, CMPD Major Ryan Butler said that a preliminary investigation revealed there was at least one person firing shots from a vehicle.

“Very complex. We’ve got multiple scenes. We’ve got multiple victims,” Butler said. “I can tell you our detectives are talking to them right now. We are talking to witnesses, again, who we were able to locate in the area.”

He added that police believe other witnesses saw the shooting unfold, and encouraged them to come forward with any information they may have.
